The Well of Zamzam is located within the precinct of the Masjid al-Haram Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Tradition recounts that Zamzam water welled up from the sand through divine providence, when the Prophet Abraham’s infant son Ishmael was overcome by thirst, after being left alone in the desert with his mother Hagar. Abraham revisited Hagar and Ishmael and was divinely guided to the spot near the Zamzam Well, upon which he and Ishmael must build the Kaaba. Millions of pilgrims visit the Well each year while performing Hajj, an annual pilgrimage to Mecca or Umrah, the Lesser Pilgrimage, to drink this blessed water. Pilgrims also continue the tradition of bringing it back for family and friends. A sample of Zamzam water was collected during an Umrah and forms the remedy.
